Hobi yg aneh…

Saya mempunyai hobi, yang bisa dibilang standar lah.. Yaitu mendengarkan musik. Tetapi setelah saya pikir-pikir kok hobi saya ini agak aneh ya..?! Ya, aneh karena hampir semua jenis musik saya dengarkan (kecuali melayu,tradisional, dan japanesse music tentunya!) Intinya sih saya suka blues dan rock, kayak The Rolling Stones, White Stripes, Metallica, dll.. Tetapi dengan musik lain, saya juga menikmatinya. Dari pop yang cheesy (The Click Five), jazz (Michael Buble), hardcore (New Found Glory), punk (Ramones, Blink 182), heavy metal (Dragon Force), sampai R n B (Kanye West).

Tak bisa dipungkiri bahwa hobi lintas-genre saya ini sedikit banyak menambah pengetahuan saya tentang musik. Walaupun saya SAMA SEKALI tidak bisa bermain alat musik tetapi paling tidak saya memahami apa musik yang dimainkan (bukannya sombong lho). Dan sekarang saya sedang mempertimbangkan untuk belajar gitar, karena for your info, saya memang ada sedikit keinginan menjadi gitaris yang memainkan musik hardcore, dengan memetik gitar Gibson Les Paul favorit saya… He..he..he..

NETRAL

Pada tulisan saya kali ini, saya mengangkat tulisan tentang salah satu grup band lokal favorit saya, yaitu Netral.
Netral adalah salah satu band Indonesia yang beraliran punk-rock-hardcore yang memang dari segi penjualan album belum terlalu besar apalagi mencapai jutaan copy tetapi memiliki massa yang lumayan banyak di tiap daerah. saya pribadi mulai menggemari musik Netral sejak album Kancut pada tahun 2003 dengan single pertamanya I Love You, disusul dengan Terbang Tenggelam, dll.. Lalu saya mulai penasaran dengan lagu-lagu netral dari album terdahulu, setelah mencari-cari dan saya mendengarkan ternyata saya semakin menyukai Netral. Lagu-lagu seperti Nurani, Pecah Belah, Wa…lah, menjadi suatu “penyegaran” bagi saya ditengah arus musik komersil yang sedang hot-hotnya di tanah air.
Netral sendiri terbentuk pada tahun 1992, saat terbentuk Netral beranggotakan: Bagus Dhanar Dhana (Bagus)/bass-vokal, Gabriel Bimo Sulaksono (Bimo)/drum, dan Ricky Dayandani (Miten)/gitar. Pada awalnya mereka hanya bermain dari pensi ke pensi di sekitar Jakarta, samapai pada akhirnya mereka memiliki penggemar sendiri. Oleh karena itu mereka berpiir untuk lebih serius yaitu dengan cara membuat album. Dan pada tahun 1994, Netral mendapatkan kontrak rekaman bersama sebuah label major, dan pada 1995 mereka merilis album pertama mereka bertajuk “Wa…lah” yang berhasil terjual sekitar 80.000 copy. Album kedua Netral keluar pada tahun 1997 dengan judul “Tidak Enak”, yang semakin menancapkan eksistensi Netral di kancah musik rock Indonesia. Pada masa-mas itu Netral sempat menjadi band pembuka bagi band luar yang datang ke Indonesia, seperti : Foo Fighter, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys. Pada Januari 1998, Netral kembali merilis album yang bertajuk “Album Minggu Ini” dan setelah beberapa bulan merilis album ketiga, Bimo sang drummer mundur dengan alasan ingin mecari warna musik lain. Setelah sekian lama memakai additional drummer, akhirnya pada tahun 1999 Eno Gitara Ryanto (Eno) masuk menjadi personil tetap. Dan pada tahun yang sama pula Netral merilis album ke empat bertajuk “PATEN” yang berhasil mencapai penjualan 150.000 copy. Bberapa saat kemudian giliran sang gitaris Miten keluar dari band. Dengan hanya beranggotakan 2 orang personil saja, pada 2001 Netral merilis album kelima dengan judul “Oke Deh”. Pada tahun 2003 Christopher Bollemeyer (Coki) masuk menjadi gtaris tetap Netral, dan di tahun yang sama Netral merilis album keenam bertitel “Kancut”. Di masa ini Netral mulai mengenalkan jargon tentang masing-masing personil, Yaitu Om Bagus, Den Coki, dan Bang Eno. Pada tahun 2005 Netral merilis 2 album sekaligus yaitu “Hitam” dan “Putih”, yang uniknya dicetak terbatas, karena ditujukan hanya untuk pendengar setia Netral. Pada album ini juga, Netral mulai meproduseri album sendiri, dengan perusahaan rekaman sendiri juga, yaitu Kancut Records. Dan pada 2007 Netral kembali melepas album bertajuk “9th” yang sekaligus menjadi pertanda eksistensi mereka selama bertahun-tahun di dunia musik.
Saya pribadi menyukai Netral karena selain memainkan musik rock alternativ, tetapi tiap lagu juga mengandung lirik yang lugas, apa adanya yang mudah dipahami. Selain itu juga, kepribadian masing-masing personil yang sangat low profil, santai, yang disukai oleh fans-fans mereka sejak lama. For your info, Coki si gitaris masuk sebagai 100 gitaris terbaik Indonesia tahun 2008 versi majalah Rolling Stone Indonesia, sementara itu Eno sang drummer dianggap mampu lepas dari bayang-bayang Bimo. Eno dianggapa memiliki sentuhan beat yang ajaib.

Sex Pistols – No Fun.

The most recognisable band name and members in punk rock. The first and the best. This band alone stood in the centre of the maelstrom with their manager Malcolm McClaren conducting before they all lost the plot in a welter of acrimony and chaos. McClaren is the link between British and American punk having (mis)managed the New York Dolls and absorbed the influences around that time -Richard Hell etc. Anyway he basically got the band together. The music, lyrics & attitude were their own. Sneering vocals, incendiary guitars and a desire to shock and provoke was something not seen before.

The main tunesmith was Glen Matlock on Bass and the lyrics from Johnny Rotten on Vocals. Guitar was Steve Jones and on drums Paul Cook. Add to this Jamie Reid’s striking artwork for flyers and sleeves and you had a potent force. McClaren was no fool he organised gigs in clubs and venues where there was guaranteed to be a reaction and free publicity with the result that momentum built up quickly behind them resulting in them signing for EMI without having to slog for years on the gig circuit. The infamous Bill Grundy incident with them swearing live on TV took them and punk rock into the media glare making them household names. But the publicity was a double edged sword.

Bans resulted on on their singles and gigs, court cases over their album artwork, physical attacks and two major labels dumped them. The Pistols found themselves on Virgin Records prisoners of their own controversy unable to write or play or their music given airplay. Worse in ‘78 Glen Matlock was fired and with him went the songwriting. Go into a record shop and you would think that the Pistols had released about ten albums. In fact their recording career was one album Never mind The Bollocks and four singles all of which appeared on said album and apart from Holidays in The Sun and Bodies all the songs on the album were two years old. Through bans etc they had written no new ones except Belsen Was A Gas (an old Sid song from his days in Flowers of Romance with Viv Albertine of the Slits). Even the playing on the album is Steve Jones and not Sid Vicious. The Pistols limped on till Rotten left on the American Tour. The band then developed into farce. Sid sang My Way, allegedly popped Nancy and then did for himself before becoming an icon for the dispossessed and into rock’n'roll mythology.

Watch the video of Pretty Vacant. Johnny – Destroy T shirt, spiky hair, can of beer and shades. Sid – Motorcycle jacket and spiky hair and Steve Jones – hanky on head and leather pants with his white Gibson (ex New York Dolls). The opening chords ring out then the bass rumbles in with the thundering drums before Rotten adds his sneering vocals ‘we’re Va-cunt …and we don’t care !’

Jones and Cook recorded with Ronnie Biggs while McClaren, to make his film, bled the Pistols coffers dry before the whole band sued him in court. There was only so much chaos to make cash from. The last thing I remember of all this is Silly Thing being played on TOTP while Legs & Co (all female dance troupe who danced to records) pogoing in green lycra pants. Dignity – who needs it ?

If it sounds tawdry its only half of the story. The Pistols were awesome . From their look to their lyrics to their music they were fresh, original and exciting and young and they didn’t give a f**k which made them dangerous. They spawned a whole culture on their own from the Clash to Siouxsie and the Banshees and the fans to the present day in terms of image style and attitude.
